Program Resource Packets
The textbook publishers have done a wonderful job developing research-based materials to support effective reading instruction. And schools are working hard to implement these new reading programs. However, implementing these programs can be a challenging task. In order to assist with this job, CORE developed a Program Resource Packet (PRP) for each of a growing number of widely used basal textbook series. The PRP contains resources aligned to the program that can be used by administrators, coaches, and classroom teachers in many CORE services related to publisher program implementation.
CORE currently offers elementary PRPs for the following:
- Open Court Reading (SRA, 2002, 2005)
- Houghton Mifflin Reading (2003, 2005)
- Harcourt Trophies (2003, 2005)
- Harcourt Collections (2002)
- Scott Foresman Reading (2005)
- McGraw-Hill Reading (2005)
CORE offers secondary PRPs for the following:
- High Point (Hampton Brown)
- REACH/Corrective Reading (SRA)
- READ 180 (Scholastic)
- Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes (Prentice Hall, 2005)
- Glencoe Literature and Writer's Choice
For each textbook program that CORE supports, CORE creates a PRP that contains the following implementation tools specifically written for that program:
- Ten- to 15-minute walk-through classroom observation forms to help administrators and coaches quickly gauge the implementation level of the program materials and instructional needs. Classroom teachers can also use these forms.
- Specific grade-by-grade observation checklists for more detailed classroom observation.
- Assessment and pacing guide to be used by administrators, coaches, and teachers to develop a school assessment plan using the program assessment resources and to lay out a pacing calendar to align instruction testing.
- Selected routines that can assist you with program implementation, including a small group instruction planner to be used by all staff.
The PRP is used in many CORE services, including the Site Implementation Visits, the Program Review Workshop, the Reading Academy, the Reading Coach Institute and Practicum, the Reading Leader Institute and Practicum, and others. It is designed to be used throughout the school year and build the literacy team’s capacity to serve all students by using program materials to their fullest potential.

Reading Coach Video and Facilitator Guide
The CORE Reading Coach Video models a three-phase strategy coaches use to help teachers learn program routines, identify needs and instructional procedures for struggling students, and use data to plan important adjustments. The video helps coaches develop strong listening skills, analytical skills, leadership skills, flexibility, persistence, empathy, and creativity. It is designed to be used with groups of coaches as part of their personal professional development, or it may be used at school sites to assist the coach-administrator team. While the coach and teacher in the video are from elementary schools, the principles apply as well to other levels. The guide provides information and resources pertaining to each phase and a recommended approach to using the video.
- The video models the three phases of coaching: Initiating and Planning, Executing, and Reflecting and Giving Feedback.
- The guide reviews the three phases of coaching, provides a sample one-day agenda for a professional development session, and provides a blackline master for participant handouts.
