Reading Academy CA, Houghton Mifflin Reading: A Legacy of Literacy, 2003, Level 1 Training for Educators New to Houghton Mifflin or New to the Grade

Approved for funding under CA SB 472 (formerly AB 466), this five-day series introduces participants to their adopted basal K–6 program, the California edition of Houghton Mifflin Reading: A Legacy of Literacy (Houghton Mifflin, 2003).

Participants will understand the research-based rationale behind a particular component of the basal series, with a focus on hands-on practice and a thorough understanding of the program materials. Critical elements of the Report of the National Reading Panel—phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding instruction, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension—are covered. Comprehensive elements of a total language arts program—writing, spelling, language conventions, and assessment and universal access—are covered as well. Teachers learn how to use the lesson planner and practice lessons. Participants understand how to use the materials to support English learners, special education students, and advanced learners. Participants will leave with a thorough understanding of the assessment components, and their use and interpretation. This course has been updated with more intensive content focused on the particular needs of English-language learners in California. Participants are ready to teach the first 6–10 weeks of the program.

Audience: All educators involved in teaching or implementing Houghton Mifflin Reading: A Legacy of Literacy (Houghton Mifflin, 2003) for the first time and educators who may have taught this program previously but are now at a different grade level. The audience can include teachers, administrators, and teacher leaders.

Location: On-site at district location with two options: event for district-only participants or district-hosted regional event.

Format: Five full-day sessions, with additional homework. The course is offered by individual grade K–6 levels (grades 4–6 may be combined).

Prerequisite: Participating districts must provide the adopted materials at the time of the sessions. All participants must have their own grade-level Teacher’s Editions.
